Roskopf-type pin-lever pocket watch – mechanical open-face design – early 20th-century European timepiece with chain.

Description:

This is an authentic Roskopf-type pin-lever pocket watch, an early 20th-century example of the durable, mass-produced watches designed for affordability and reliability. These watches, inspired by Georges Frederic Roskopf’s 1860s invention, were made to bring accurate timekeeping to the working class, becoming immensely popular throughout Europe and Latin America.

The dial features black Roman numerals on a white enamel face, signed “J. Ramos y Nieto, Frères” around the center — a likely retailer or distributor mark. It also includes outer minute markers, blued-steel spade hands, and a small seconds subdial near 6 o’clock. The dial displays light wear and a charming patina consistent with age and use.

The nickel-plated open-face case houses a robust pin-lever escapement movement, marked “Roskopf Patent” and “En Secconde / Segunda Mano”, referencing its subsidiary seconds function. The movement also bears French inscriptions “Avance / Retard” for regulation and “Breveté” (Patented), along with visible brass gears and steel components.

This type of movement, known for its simplicity and ruggedness, was widely used in inexpensive, reliable watches between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The watch retains its original winding crown and attached vintage metal chain, enhancing its period authenticity.

Value and Sale Information:

Roskopf-type pocket watches hold enduring appeal for collectors of early industrial and European horology. Their blend of mechanical simplicity and historical value makes them an excellent entry point into antique watch collecting. This example’s bilingual markings and original chain add charm and uniqueness.

Comparable examples in similar preserved condition generally range from $150 to $300, depending on case finish, dial quality, and functionality.

This particular piece, with crisp markings and intact movement details, is valued around $225.

Offered for sale as-is.

A fine and representative example of Roskopf’s legacy of accessible timekeeping, this pocket watch captures the ingenuity and global reach of early 20th-century European watchmaking.
